The response at last Thursday’s show with Ghostface Killah at Cat’s Cradle. I stepped on stage with only a few fans in the crowd and walked away with almost 400+ people chanting my name. Best feeling in the world!

So I guess I am just going to continue with this “Here is how I became aware of this under-the-radar record” story-telling hour…

I’ll probably sound REALLY old saying this, but:

In 2003 or 2004, I remember buying some CD at Tower Records (R.I.P.) and along side it came this compilation album titled: “Okayplayer: True Notes Vol. 1”.

I wasn’t sure what I was going to hear once I began listening to the album but I knew that it couldn’t be garbage if it was coming from Okayplayer.

I also don’t know that most of the artists on the compilation were very well-known at the time but, after looking at the list again right now, I see that there are some excellent picks here.

Anyway, I put the CD in my car and let each track play through. I remember enjoying them all, but, this track by Supastition (Kam Moye?) was the stand out for me.

Not only did his flow and delivery win me over but I found myself REALLY relating with his choice of subject matter-and I still do today.

When my friends are down about their jobs, or life, I put them on to this record and they always have that “oh shit, I feel this and I dig it” moment.

(The one I am always searching for….)

Supastition Announces Two Upcoming Releases for 2013

Here are a few upcoming releases that I am proud to present to the world this year. Each of these will feature one producer which is different from anything I’ve done before. Here’s a quick breakdown of each project and the tentative release date.

Supastition and Stoupe (formerly of Jedi Mind Tricks) have joined forces to create the music collective, VESTIGE, who will focus solely on releasing concept albums based around one common theme. The first project will be entitled The Inanimate Life which documents the fictional life story of a man born to an unfit mother and how his life spirals out of control due to her actions as well as his own mistakes. The story and lyrics were written by Supastition with Stoupe and his production team (Bad Tape) handling the music which meshes together hip hop, downtempo, and live instrumentation. VESTIGE combines the renowned storytelling abilities of Supastition matched with the cinematic feel of Stoupe’s cryptic beatmaking. The MC/producer duo have been crafting the concept album for the past year while agreeing not to publicly discuss it until its completion.

Vestige: a trace of something that is disappearing or no longer exists.

After the recent success of The Blackboard EP, Supastition returns to the studio with German-based producer, Rik Marvel, who has crafted music for the likes of Skillz, Joy Denalane, and many others. The Guilt Trip EP continues Supastition’s return to vintage sounding hip hop with Rik Marvel handling all of the production duties. After listening to a beat tape that Rik Marvel (who along with fellow Producer, Microphono, makes up the production duo “The Phantom Notes”) had released, Supa contacted him about recording a full EP to the tracks. Guilt Trip EP will be released via Bandcamp in July 2013 with a download of the instrumentals to accompany it.

1. Life motto or favorite quotation, that you could tattoo on your body?
“Don’t strive to make your presence noticed, just make your absence felt.”

2. Biggest success in life
Seeing how much I’ve grown and improved as a husband and father over the past few years is my definition of success. Plus, the fact that I had a chance to travel the world before the age of 30.

3. Biggest failure in life
I’ve failed plenty as a man, friend, husband, father, and artist. I’m proud to say that I’ve learned from those mistakes and become a great inspiration in all of those roles now.

4. Your first sports idol
At this point in life, I don’t really look to entertainers as my idols. If anyone then it would be Muhammad Ali. His story and what he stood for can’t be duplicated.

5. Favorite movie
I have a few actually… Boondock Saints, Autobiography of Malcolm X, Oleboy, A Time to Kill, Amores Perros

6. Favorite book
The Alchemist, Nigger: Autobiography of Dick Gregory

7. Favorite alcohol/drink
Not really a drinker but I’d prefer vodka over anything else.

8. The most important thing in your wardrobe
The hat! I love hats and fitted caps. I got that from my stepfather who always rocked fresh hats daily.

9. 3 qualities of an ideal woman
Humility, sense of humor, and a dedication and love for family.

10. 3 most beautiful women in the world
My mother, my wife, and my daughters.

11. If you had to hang one poster on your wall, it would be…
John Henrik Clarke or Marcus Garvey.

12. Your dream car
Lexus LF-LC. It’s a concept sports car but I love the design of it.

13. One city you would love to visit
Cape Town, South Africa

14. 3 albums, which you would take on a desert island
Best of Nina Simone, J-Dilla Anthology, Nas ‘Illmatic’

15. The most important song you recorded in your life
Fountain of Youth. Based on the responses, sales, and the message behind the song, it’s possibly the most timeless song that I’ve ever written.

16. The craziest memory connected with rap
Being personally invited by ?uestlove to perform live on stage during The Roots set back in 2004.

17. The craziest party memory
My first time at the Do-Over in LA. The DJs, people, and vibe were incredible.

18. School time was…
Some of the best ciphers in my childhood.

19. Perfect weekend scenario
A peaceful dinner with family, good movie, and some time to write a song.

20. The thing which irritates you the most about people is…
How they disappear when you’re at your lowest point but how they suddenly need your attention and assistance when you’re back in the spotlight.

21. If it wasn’t for rap, you would be…
An author or graphic designer. My other loves are art and writing.
